Business Central vs Dynamics GP

Dynamics GP is on-premises ERP in its final support era: Microsoft ended new customer sales and has published end-of-support timelines.

The short answer

Dynamics GP is on-premises ERP in its final support era: Microsoft ended new customer sales and has published end-of-support timelines, so GP receives no new functional investment. Business Central is its cloud successor, with the same accounting concepts, a modern web and mobile client, native Microsoft 365 integration and continuous updates. For GP customers, the question is no longer whether to move but how to sequence customizations and history.

01

What carries over conceptually

  • Chart of accounts, segments map to Business Central dimensions
  • Inventory items, vendors, customers and open transactions migrate through standard tooling
  • Familiar subledger structure — payables, receivables, bank, fixed assets, inventory
  • SmartList-style ad hoc querying is replaced by native Excel and Power BI on live data
02

What has to be rethought

Dexterity customizations and heavily modified windows do not port. They get re-implemented as extensions, replaced by native capability, or dropped because the process changed since they were written. Cataloging them honestly is the single biggest determinant of project cost.

Integrations built on direct SQL access must be rebuilt against APIs. This is usually an improvement — it removes the fragility of writing straight into tables — but it is real work that has to be budgeted.

03

History and reporting strategy

  • Bring opening balances plus one to two years of detail; retain GP read-only or archive to a reporting database for older years
  • Rebuild management reports in Power BI on Business Central data before go-live, not after
  • Validate a full month-end close in a sandbox against known GP numbers
04

Sequencing a low-risk migration

  • Inventory customizations, integrations and reports, and decide keep, replace or retire for each
  • Design the dimension structure that replaces GP account segments
  • Clean item, vendor and customer masters before any load
  • Run a sandbox close and reconcile to GP to the penny
  • Cut over at a period boundary with a rehearsed freeze and a staffed first week

Common mistakes

What goes wrong most often.

  • Recreating GP customizations that no longer match how the business runs
  • Rebuilding integrations with direct database writes instead of APIs
  • Deferring report rebuilds until after go-live
  • Attempting to migrate every historical year into the new system

Common questions

Straight answers, no sales theater.

How long do we have on GP?

Microsoft has ended new customer sales and published end-of-support dates, so plan on a defined runway rather than an open one. Treat the migration as a scheduled program, not an emergency, and confirm current dates against Microsoft's lifecycle documentation.

Can we run GP and Business Central in parallel?

For a period, yes — commonly by entity or by site. Parallel operation of the same entity for long stretches doubles the workload and should be time-boxed.

Will our GP reports still work?

Not directly. Management reporting is rebuilt in Power BI or native financial reporting, which is why report rebuild belongs in the pre-go-live scope.
