What is internet redundancy?

Internet redundancy means a business has more than one path to the internet and switches between them automatically when one fails. Typically that is a primary fiber or broadband circuit plus a secondary connection over a different medium — a second provider, LTE, 5G or satellite — with a firewall configured to detect failure and reroute traffic within seconds.

What actually goes down

Circuit outages are rarely dramatic. A contractor cuts a line down the street, a provider pushes a bad configuration, an ONT fails, or the local loop degrades until VoIP breaks while web browsing still 'works'.

Once a company runs cloud ERP, Microsoft 365, VoIP and remote access over one circuit, that circuit is the business. Treating it as a single point of failure is a business decision, and it should be made deliberately.

Choosing a backup medium

Diversity matters more than raw speed. A second fiber circuit from a provider that leases the same physical path is not redundancy. LTE and 5G give genuine path diversity and are usually enough to keep email, ERP access and card processing alive. Starlink is useful where terrestrial options are limited.

We size the backup for the work that must continue, not for full-speed business as usual — and we tell employees in advance which is which.

LTE, 5G or Starlink for backup internet?

5G where coverage is strong, LTE as a dependable baseline, Starlink where terrestrial options are poor or the site is remote. All three provide path diversity from a wired circuit, which is the main point.

Does failover happen automatically?

Yes, when the firewall is configured for it. We set failover thresholds, test them, and confirm which applications survive the transition and which reconnect.

Do you handle the ISP relationship?

Yes. We source circuits, coordinate installs, and own escalation with the provider during outages so your staff isn't sitting in a support queue.
