Business Central for Manufacturing

Receiving through shipping in one system — configured by people who have watched it run on a plant floor.

Is Business Central a good fit for manufacturers?

For small and mid-sized discrete manufacturers, generally yes. Business Central handles items and bills of material, routings and production orders, warehouse locations and bins, purchasing and receiving, sales and shipping, and finance with dimensional reporting — and it integrates with Microsoft 365 and Power BI, which most manufacturers already own.

01

The modules that carry the plant

  • Items, units of measure, variants and costing
  • BOMs and routings for production
  • Production orders and consumption/output posting
  • Purchase orders, receiving and vendor management
  • Warehouse locations, bins, put-away and picking
  • Sales orders, shipments and invoicing
  • Dimensions for location, product line and department reporting
  • Multi-location and multi-entity setup
02

Data discipline decides whether it works

Inventory accuracy is a process outcome, not a software feature. If receiving is posted late, units of measure are inconsistent, or scrap is never recorded, the ERP will faithfully report a fiction.

We work on the transaction discipline alongside the configuration — who posts what, when, and on which device.

03

Phased rollout in a plant that can't stop

Phasing by function keeps production running: stabilize purchasing and receiving, then inventory, then production, then reporting. Each phase gets training for the people who touch it and a fallback plan for the week after cutover.

Our project examples are described in anonymized form unless a customer has approved being named.

Common questions

Does Business Central support barcode scanning?

Warehouse operations support scanning workflows, typically with handheld devices and warehouse-mobile interfaces or an add-on, backed by properly designed bins and locations.

Can it handle multiple plants?

Yes, through multi-location inventory and, where entities are separate, multi-company setup with consolidated reporting.
