Business Central is Microsoft's cloud ERP for small and mid-sized organizations. It runs finance, purchasing, inventory, sales, warehousing and production in a single system, with dimensional reporting, Microsoft 365 integration and native Power BI connectivity. For mid-sized manufacturers, it typically replaces an aging ERP plus a layer of spreadsheets.
Legacy on-premises ERP often does exactly what a company asked for in 2009, maintained by customizations nobody wants to touch. Business Central trades that depth for a maintained platform, a predictable upgrade path and native integration with tools the company already uses.
The honest tradeoff: heavily customized legacy systems can do specific things Business Central will not do out of the box, and process change is part of the project.
